To catch a wild Atlantic Salmon is a dream for many anglers, and at Benmore Estate we work tirelessly to protect and preserve these magnificent, endangered fish.
Whether you are casting your first fly line or a seasoned rod, a day out on our waters with one of our expert ghillies is an unforgettable Scottish experience. Our guides will tailor an itinerary to suit your ability and ambitions.
The unspoilt rivers and lochs of the estate offer first-class salmon and trout fishing on some of Scotland’s most beautiful waters. Cast for wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout on our rivers, try your hand at dapping on the spectacular Loch Ba, or try your hand at trout fishing on Loch Bearnach.
Loch Ba
One of Mull’s most productive waters, Loch Ba holds strong stocks of wild Brown Trout, Seat Trout and Atlantic Salmon, with records to 20lbs and 30lbs respectively. The salmon run from June to October, fished by spinning, wet fly or dapping from our traditional clinker-built boats, against a backdrop of two great glacial glens and some of the island’s finest scenery.
River Ba
River Ba meanders just two and a half miles from loch to estuary, passing through native woodland before opening out onto the National Scenic Area of Loch na Keal.
More than ten named pools punctuate the river’s relatively flat course, with deep holding pools and stone weirs giving salmon and sea trout plenty of reason to linger. Salmon begin returning from mid-May, with the first real runs expected towards the end of June. Fishing the river is largely reserved for guests booking Knock House exclusively.
River Forsa
Widely regarded as one of the finest salmon rivers on Mull, the River Forsa is a classic spate river: water-dependent and all the more exciting for it. After rain, over seven miles of fly-fishing opens up across 40 named pools, divided into three rotating beats.
The first fish appear in May, though the river fishes best from July to October. The lower pools are particularly thrilling, with salmon and sea trout visible leaping in the sea pool beneath the falls as they wait to run upstream. In keeping with our conservation commitment, all salmon caught on the River Forsa are returned.
Trout Fishing
Benmore also offers some of the finest trout fishing on Mull, from hidden hill lochs teeming with wild brown trout to sea trout on the larger open waters.
Loch Bearnach is a highlight: perched 300 feet above Loch Spelve, this eight-hectare hill loch offers prolific brown trout fishing, best tackled from the boat with light tackle. Most fish run to around 1.5lbs, though catch records between 5 and 9lbs suggest there are monsters in the depths. Half the magic is the 30-minute walk up.
