Hill Walking

There are so many walks to do on the Isle of Mull, from strolls down glens and along the coast, to bagging a munro!

Mull is a hill walker’s paradise where every ridge reveals a new panorama of sea, sky and island. For the peak baggers, climb Benmore (Mull’s only Munro) or Dùn da Ghaoithe (the Corbett on the island). There are also plenty of more gentle walks. From exploring hidden beaches or visiting lost villages and geological formations, Mull really has it all. Don’t forget to take your camera, as all hikes provide opportunities to see sea and golden eagles, red deer and otters along the way.

Below are some of our favourite walks on the estate for you to enjoy!

1. Explore the Shores of Loch Ba

Nestled in the glen behind Knock, Loch Ba offers perfect tranquillity — whether you’re after a long hike or a gentle stroll along the shore. Take in sweeping mountain views without the demanding climb, and keep an eye out for white-tailed sea eagles.

Starting from the Knock car park, follow the farm track to the loch and continue as far as you like. Push to the end of the glen and you’ll reach the old settlement of Gortenbuie — an exceptionally peaceful spot for lunch before the return.

  • TOTAL TIME: Up to you (to Gortenbuie at the end of the loch will take about 2 hours to reach)
  • TOTAL DISTANCE: 16km to Gortenbuie and back
  • START POINT: Your doorstep/Knock
  • DIFFICULTY: Easy
  • OS MAP: 375 Mull East

2. Gallivant through Glenforsa

Glen Forsa is a sweeping, open glen at the very heart of Mull, dominated by Beinn Talaidh at its head. A gravel track gives easy access from the car park, winding alongside the river through highland cattle, red deer and eagle country, and passing an active native woodland creation scheme along the way.

The track leads to the MBA bothy at Tomsleibhe, a natural turning point, though the more adventurous can push on to summit Beinn Talaidh (the path runs out and it steepens, so come prepared). Finish with lunch or cake at the Glenforsa Café, just moments from the car park.

  • TOTAL TIME: 2-3 Hours to the bothy and back
  • TOTAL DISTANCE: 10km
  • START POINT: Glen Forsa
  • DIFFICULTY: Easy
  • OS MAP: 375 Mull East

3. Summit Ben More

09:37

The island’s only Munro and the highest peak in the Scottish Isles at 966m, Ben More — ‘big hill’ in Gaelic — more than lives up to its name. The well-trodden path is accessible to all abilities (snacks essential), and on a clear day the 360° summit views across Mull and far beyond are absolutely worth it. Keep a close eye on the forecast and pick your day wisely, you won’t be disappointed!

  • TOTAL TIME: 4 – 7 hours
  • TOTAL DISTANCE: 9.5km
  • START POINT: Dhiseig car park (6km from Knock – add extra time if walking)
  • DIFFICULTY: Moderate (steep in parts but with a well trodden path most of the way)
  • OS MAP: 375 Mull East
